”Just as the weather in Virginia began to cool slightly and the leaves began to give a hint of color, I headed out for a morning of photography,” explains Partin. “I launched my kayak into Quantico Creek, right where it meets the Potomac River. When I use my kayak as a vessel for photography, I find I can often get closer to wildlife because my human form is somewhat disguised. As I paddled along the dark shoreline, I noticed this great blue heron poised perfectly under this brightly colored tree, the light hitting it in the most beautiful way. I balanced my camera on my knee and snapped this photo before the moment was gone.”
