Carhartt Launches Resale Program for Recycling Worn Jackets, Coveralls, and More

CAMPING GEAR

Fans of Carhartt threads now have a new way to buy the company’s apparel while promoting sustainability.

Today, the popular workwear brand announced a new resale program called Carhartt Reworked, which offers used brand clothing. Carhartt claims it’s the “first branded resale site in the workwear industry,” giving customers the chance to get old or worn products repaired or buy others’ “reworked” clothing online.

Company leaders aim to extend the life of Carhartt’s clothing, reduce waste, and keep “imperfect gear” out of landfills. As of March 1, these used-but-not-used-up products can be found at Reworked.Carhartt.com. Participating Carhartt stores will also accept in-store trade-ins.

Carhartt joins several other companies, like Arc’teryx, which have also recently launched programs selling recycled gear

“Carhartt Reworked is an extension of our commitment to deliver the durability and reliability that hardworking people know and love, while reducing our environmental footprint,” Gretchen R. Valade, director of sustainability at Carhartt, said in a press release. “With the help of Trove’s expertise in circular business and recommerce, we’re able to keep Carhartt products in use longer, out of landfills, and in the hands of people who need it.”

Carhartt Reworked: Program Details

The new program is possible thanks to Carhartt’s partnership with Trove, a third-party company that brings trade-in and resale services to e-commerce.

Carhartt Reworked starts by accepting previously worn or slightly imperfect gear from consumer trade-ins, customer returns, or damaged inventory. To trade in your old Carhartt clothing, however, you’ll need to meet several requirements.

All accepted products must meet condition standards, be less than 10 years old, and meet an original MSRP minimum of $50, the company said. Acceptable categories include: outerwear, shirt jackets, bibs and overalls, hoodies, sweatshirts, and pants.

Trade-Ins and Donations

Those who bring eligible gear to participating Carhartt stores can exchange it for a digital gift card. Those cards can then be used on Reworked.Carhartt.com, Carhartt.com, or at any Carhartt store. Gear ineligible for the program will still be recycled or donated, the company said.

Customers seeking to make returns can expect one of several outcomes, depending on the garment’s condition. It can be resold, cleaned and repaired, or just recycled.

The trade-in program will start with six stores across the U.S. before expanding to all Carhartt retail locations in 2023. As the program grows, trade-ins will be available via online mail-in. Learn more on Carhartt’s website for reworked gear.
