Paddling this hybrid canoe/kayak on a lake near the 50 Campfires basecamp, we loved the low center of gravity from the centered seat, combined with the open-top storage of the wide body. Unlike our kayaks, the NEXT canoe was easy to clean at the end of the day, with any water that got in easily emptying out, and when we took this boat out on the water for a fishing trip, it was easy to access our tackle, rods and cooler throughout the day. Of course, the greatest benefit of the open design, over a traditional kayak, is the amount of gear you can haul. Not that we’re saying to bring everything on your trip down the river, but it’s sure nice to have the option. We found the Old Town NEXT canoe to be an easy paddling, straight tracking craft, and just as it’s touted the perfect hybrid between a canoe and a kayak.
